Gressoney-Saint-Jean - life base

“Folklore and refinement,
against the magical backdrop of the Mont Rose glacier”

Immersed in the green of the woods, dotted with perfectly preserved Walser houses, on the banks of a small lake with picturesque emerald waters and a magnificent view over the Lyskamm glacier, Gressoney-Saint-Jean offers one of the most scenic landscapes of the Aosta Valley.

With strong links to their folkloric traditions, the residents of Gressoney proudly wear the typical costume of red, black and white, which is a must during the Patron Saint’s festival of St. John, and every year on the 23rd of June illuminates the night with the evocative and ritual ‘fires’. Typical of the town is the cheese ‘toma’ of Gressoney, and the Aosta Valley DOP label(meaning Denomination of Protected Origin).

A renowned tourist destination, Gressoney-Saint-Jean offers lovers of skiing and mountaineering a truly unparalleled variety, of panoramas and sports, both in winter and summer.

Action Gressoney-Saint-Jean

For experienced climbers: the rock climbing walls of Tschachtelaz are ideal for climbers looking for routes which can put their strength and resistance to the test. For many years Gressoney’s alpine guides have used the routes of these walls for courses and meetings. Test out your own abilities!

Alpine and Nordic skiing: winter sports immersed in a natural and evocative landscape, on alpine ski slopes which unfold over 13 kilometres. The cross-country skiing is also worth remarking upon: 25 kilometres among woodland, with magnificent views over the glaciers. Every year in the month of January the town hosts: “The Monterosalauf”, an international Nordic skiing race.
