The first night brought some surprises. And big ones… In about 30 hours, the TOR330 - Tor des Géants® lost several top runners. The first to surrender, before the Col de l'Entrelor, was King Franco Collé, struggling with an Achilles tendon problem that has been tormenting him for some time and has returned at the least opportune moment. Gradually, the excellent names on the retired list have increased: Peter Kienzl and Kim Collison, Melissa Paganelli and Lisa Borzani.
Retreats that paved the way for the leaders of the race, when the contenders for the final victory passed half of their fatigue. Jonas Russi seemed set to repeat last year's plot, with a couple race together with Roman Ficek (last year it was Collé himself), but on the climb towards Gressoney he tried to accelerate to outdistance what had been up until then his travel companion: at the Rifugio della Barma, where he arrived at 4.41 pm, his advantage over the blond Polish grew to one hour and twenty minutes. Solid third was an excellent Simone Corsini, who cut his delay from Ficek to just 34 minutes.
The women's competition is also proceeding head to head, but with an "accordion" trend: Silvia Trigueros Garrote increases and shortens her advantage over the British Sabrina Verjee at each time measurement: if at the entrance to the life base of Donnas - where the two very strong athletes entered ninth and tenth respectively of the overall standings - the gap was 13 minutes, the Spaniard went out without stopping, thus finding herself 50 minutes ahead. At Sassa Trigueros Garrote arrived at 6:02 pm, while Verjee arrived at 6:41 pm. Behind them, at the moment the Australian Sophie Grant, who arrived in Perloz at 6:34 pm, seems to be the most accredited to fight for the podium.
Sebastien Raichon and Marina Plavan always leading the TOR450 - Tor des Glaciers
Sebastien Raichon and Marina Plavan's journey on the 450 kilometers of Tor des Glaciers continues alone. The Frenchman was almost five hours ahead of Luca Papi and Tiaan Erwee at the Rifugio della Barma.
Marina Plavan also advances and, after passing the Dortoir Retempio at 2:29 pm, she is arriving at the Rifugio Bonze. Isabelle Ost (with a 1h29' delay at Retempio) and Nicky Spinks are right behind her.
Tomorrow at 9pm from Gressoney-Saint-Jean the start of TOR130 - Tot Dret
And while on the trails there are still almost 1000 athletes competing, tomorrow evening at 9pm from Gressoney-Saint-Jean 500 more will start for the TOR130 - Tot Dret, 130 kilometers and 12,000 meters of elevation gain, to be completed in 144 hours at the most. The first will arrive in Courmayeur on Wednesday evening.
